Venture Numbers From Dow Jones Also Show Big Investment Drop

In the second set of venture capital numbers released today, Dow Jones VentureSource has released its tabulation of Q4 2012 venture capital financings, reporting similar numbers to those from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the National Venture Capital Association, and Thomson Reuters released earlier this morning. According to Dow Jones, it also tabulated a decline in fourth quarter investments in 2012, with companies raising $6.6 billion in 733 venture capital deals; that was a 20 percent decrease in capital and 17 percent decrease in deals from Q4 of 2011. For the year, Dow Jones totaled $29.7 billion invested across 3,363 deals, which also represented a decline from 2011, a 15 percent drop in capital and 4 percent decline in deals.

Among interesting tidbits from Dow Jones, the company highlighted the drastic drop in interest in clean technology and energy companies; the group said that investments in energy and utilities saw its worst year since 2006 in terms of both deals and capital raised. Only $1.7 billion was invested in those deals, down from $3.2 billion in 2011. Dow Jones did not provide state-by-state or area-by-area breakdowns in its venture capital reporting numbers.
