Vitesse Targets Fiber-to-the-Home
Camarillo-based Vitesse Semiconductor, a developer of chips for the networking market, announced Tuesday that it has rolled out a new chipset targeted at the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) market. Vitesse said the new product is a physical media dependent (PMD) chipset for 10 Gbps Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (10G-EPON), and is targeted at OEMs developing equipment for fiber-based networks. 1G-EPON is currently being deployed in Asia. Vitesse said its new chipset is sampling today, with a reference design evaluation board to be released in Q2. 10G-EPON is being standardized by the IEEE P802.3av standards committee, and is expected to be the next generation replacement for current 1G-EPON optical networking standards.
