UCLA Gets $6M For Nanotechnology Center

The U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) said today that it has awarded $6M in grants to the University of California, Los Angeles, focused on energy conservation technologies in microelectronics and nanotechnology. According to the NIST, the grants are part of a $50M grant award to five institutions nationwide. The UCLA grant goes to the Western Institute of Nanotechnology on Green Engineering and Metrology (WIN GEM), which has a budget of $30.0M. The new institute is part of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. NIST said UCLA"s research institute focuses research on low-power, nonvolatile nanoelectronics, green manufacturing of novel nanomaterial-based energy technologies, and new materials for energy generation, storage and management. The new facility is expected to be completed by Spring of 2014.
