Study: Emerging Technology Clusters Complement Silicon Valley, Others

A new study, which looks at "silicon clusters" of technology companies outside Silicon Valley, finds that those clusters actually stimulate rather than compete with developed market clusters. The study--published by Professor Nukhet Harmancioğlu (Koc University, Turkey) and Gerard J. Tellis (USC Marshall)--said the research counters the prevailing wisdom that those clusters "steal" from Silicon Valley and other clusters in developed markets. The study looked at developing clusters such as the Silicon Plateau in Bangalore, Zhongguancun in Beijing, Silicon Island in Taipei, Silicon Fen in Cambridgeshire, and Silicon Wadi around Tel Aviv along with existing, developed clusters such as Shinjuku in Tokyo, Silicon Forest in Seattle, Silicon Hills in Austin, Route 128 around Boston and Silicon Valley. The study found that emerging innovation clusters actually helped already developed clusters grow. It's unclear whether the technology clusters in Southern California, such as "Silicon Beach", where classified as established or new in the study, however, Silicon Beach has been well established as a technology growth area for more than 20 years.Image: Los Angeles skyline via aydinphoto@flickr.
