Studios Get Preliminary Injuction Against RealNetworks In DVD Case
A consortium of Hollywood studios, including Disney, Paramount, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox, NBC Universal, Warner Brothers, and Viacom, has scored a preliminary injunction against RealNetworks in a DVD copying software case. According to a ruling handed down by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California Tuesday, it has issued a preliminary injunction against RealNetworks which prohibits the manufacturing and distribution of the firm's RealDVD software, which allowed PC users to copy DVDs to their PCs for playback later. RealNetworks had launched its RealDVD software in September of last year, allowing PC users to insert DVDs into their PC hard drives, using a license it owned for CSS decoding to decode the encryption on those DVDs via software; the firm pulled the software in October after the lawsuit was filed against the firm.
