RealD, Sony Link On 3D TV Effort
Los Angeles-based RealD, a supplier of hardware for projecting 3D movies, and consumer electronics giant Sony are in a pact to bring 3D television to the market, the firms said Thursday. According to Sony and RealD, their technology partnership will aim to bring immersive, 3D home entertainment to consumers beginning next year, using Sony's LCD panel televisions in sync with 3D eyewear based on RealD's technology. Financial details of the partnership were not outlined. The two said that Sony is licensing the stereoscopic RealD format, know-how in producing both active and passive 3D eyewear, and other RealD technologies as part o the deal. The firms said Sony will roll out full HD 3D images on new BRAVIA branded LCD TVs.
