Qualcomm Expands Efforts in Africa
San Diego-based Qualcomm said yesterday that it has opened up a new office in Lagos, Nigeria, which will serve as a hub for the firm's West Africa business operations. According to Qualcomm, the office will serve mobile operators and device manufacturers serving Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Cameroon. The new office is for QCOM Wireless Technologies Limited, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm. Qualcomm said the office will support growth and development of the 3G mobile market in West Africa. Qualcomm cited figures that half of Nigeria's population is in rural areas, beyond the reach of fixed line broadband solutions.
