LightPointe Ships 60Ghz Radios
San Diego-based LightPointe, a developer of point-to-point radios used for wireless backhaul, said this week that it has begun shipping 60Ghz radios, which work in a newly FCC approved 64 to 71 Ghz unlicensed frequency band. According to LightPointe, the new systems are designed for point-to-point wireless bridging in the high speed trading, data center connectivity, and digital video areas. LightPointe said its new radios have a range exceeding two miles, and have lower "oxygen attenuation" than other existing microwave radios. Microwave frequency radios typically can support very large bandwidths for things like data transfer and video, but due to their frequency can face issues due to atmospheric conditions like fog, clouds, smog, dust, and rain.
