LegalZoom Says Its Services Are Legal In New Jersey
Glendale-based online legal referral provider LegalZoom says it is legal in New Jersey, despite a recent opinion issued by the New Jersey Supreme Court. According to LegalZoom, recent reports on the opinion of the New Jersey Supreme Court "misinterpret the findings", and that New Jersey attorneys can continue to ethically work with LegalZoom. A recent report had said that New Jersey had declared LegalZoom off limits to attorneys in the state, along with Avvo and RocketLawyer, over concerns of fee-sharing and referral fees. LegalZoom said that, in its case, it was required to simply complete a form and receive a registration number in order to comply with the opinion. The legal opinion had said, although LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer "appear to operate legal service plans through their websites" that New Jersey lawyers may not participate in those plans because they were not registered with the Administrative Office of the Courts.
