Airbnb Host Pays $5,000 After Racist Cancellation Of UCLA Student's Booking
An Airbnb host has been ordered to pay $5,000, provide a personal apology, and attend a college course in Asian American studies, after the host cancelled an Asian UCLA student's reservation with a racist text. According to The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, the host of an Airbnb listing near Big Bear texted University of California, Los Angeles School of Law student Dyne Suh that she was cancelling her listing, saying in a text "I wouldn't rent it to u if u were the last person on earth" and "One word says it all. Asian." The incident occurred in February of this year. The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing said the host involved in the matter was permanently banned from its platform by Airbnb as a result of the incident. The host in question also apparently texted Suh saying "This is why we have Trump" and "And I will not allow this country to be told what to do by foreigners."
