Aerovironment Wins $2.3M DARPA Contract

Monrovia-based unmanned aircraft maker Aerovironment said this week that it has entered into a $2.3M contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). According to Aerovironment, it will help to develop a medium altitude, long-endurance unammned aircraft system designed to operate from small ships, and to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. Aerovironment is a subcontractor of Sierra Nevada Corporation, which won the overall contract. The goal of the DARPA project is to develop an unmanned aircraft which can handle payloads of 600 pounds and operate up to 900 nautical miles from a ship.
